We were recently named one of the most sustainable companies in the world. Here's why.

Sustainability is a pretty popular buzzword these days.

After all, who doesn't love our beautiful planet? Companies around the globe have recognized the importance of investing in eco-friendly initiatives.

At Nokian Tyres, we're putting our commitment to sustainability where the rubber meets the road. And people are noticing. Once again this year, we have been named one of the most sustainable companies in the world.

The ranking comes from RobecoSAM, whose annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment is considered to be a reliable and comprehensive report of how sustainability is implemented in companies around the world. We earned a silver rating for our 2018 sustainability efforts, which placed us in the top 100 of the 2,600 publicly traded companies RobecoSAM evaluated. The silver rating bumps us up from bronze recognition a year ago.

Here are some of the reasons we ranked so high:

Eight-percent lower rolling resistance

We lowered the rolling resistance of our tires by 8 percent between 2013 and 2018. That reduces carbon dioxide emissions by the equivalent of 65,000 passenger cars’ emissions each year.

Eliminating health hazards

Nokian Tyres is a pioneer in eliminating possible health hazards of our raw materials. We were the first company in our industry to stop using high-aromatic oils. We use renewable raw materials, such as canola oil in winter tires and pine oil in summer tires, and we're actively looking for new ones.

Solar power

Last year, we installed solar panels to power our Vermont tire warehouse. The panels generate clean renewable energy to fuel our distribution facility.

Eco-friendly production facilities

We craft tires in an environmentally responsible manner. We recycle 100 percent of production waste at our flagship factory in Nokia, Finland, and we're displaying a comparable commitment to sustainable production at our other European facility and our new factory in Dayton, Tennessee.

We're happy to receive recognition for our sustainability efforts, because we want drivers to be proud when they drive our tires. Those tires are built to provide peace of mind for each beautiful journey -- and to keep those journeys beautiful by preserving our planet.
