As another winter storm approaches, I am reminded that America needs to end its love affair with salting roads. In addition to being bad for the environment, it is bad for vehicles and equipment. States need to seriously rethink their salt programs and instead urge drivers to get winter tires. The expectation that roads in the snowbelt should be snow free so that people can drive on bald all season or summer tires is crazy.
